To me, the most important thing to get right in any space is the lighting. This includes lights and lamps but foremost it means windows. From the moment we set foot in The Hideaway we fell in love with the natural light that streams into the space through the many windows and doors.
Sadly most of the windows and doors were single glazed, not secure, rotten and in many places had big gaps.
In our initial planning we went back and forth between keeping a cottage feel by replacing everything with wooden framed windows, and opting for something less traditional.
It wasn’t until we came across @1st_folding_sliding_doors that we knew we wanted to go for something modern. Their bespoke windows and doors are designed around your space and they worked with us at every stage from planning to installation to help us find the exact look we wanted.
We chose black powder coated steel frame windows and doors throughout- they look simple and slick and also hold the heat in for Winter and open out in Summer to create a real indoor/ outdoor vibe which was so important to us.
In the main living space we had chunky bi-folds that didn’t quite fit the frame or meet each other; they let drafts though and sometimes rain! They also stopped a greta deal of light from coming into the back of the house.

We opted to replace these with big glass sliding doors with minimal sight lines.

As soon as the heavy bi-folds were off the space felt instantly bigger and brighter.

They work so well alongside our original kitchen windows, we are thrilled with how they turned out and how they transform the living space.
In Summer we will have them open non stop, opening up the decking area as an extra room for dining and relaxing.

At the front of the house we had these very rotten double white doors.
We loved the quirkiness of two front doors, but only one opened and both were beyond saving.
We designed a big glass panel and a big glass door. It really opens up the porch area and completely changes the look of the front of the house.

Bye then…
